Was Shakespeare a Genre Writer?

I'm helping Such a Novel Idea celebrate their blogiversary by talking about two of my favorite things: Writing and Shakespeare! Come give me your opinion about if you think Shakespeare was a literary or genre writer, and sign up for some great giveaways, too. Today a signed copy of the Maze Runner by James Dashner is up for grabs. Look forward to seeing you there!

PS: There won't be a Mindfulness Monday post tomorrow. I'm behind with "getting the house ready to sell" chores, and have to focus on that today. This week I've been very aware of taking time to breathe and center though. It's been kind of a hellish week.

  1. Selling your house? Ouch!! I hate moving. In the fantasy, GHOST OF A CHANCE, where I am on the run through my fictional worlds, I had Shakespeare try to murder me since I murdered his prose so often!! :-) I haven't visited much since my keyboard was busted, my work got crazy, and old health issues. May your house selling go smoothly!

    1. I've noticed you've been absent. I hope things are going better now! Thanks for coming over, saying hi and commiserating!

  2. I haven't read enough Shakespeare to give you an informed opinion. It's been years since I tried King Lear-and gave up. Maybe I should try another. What book of his would you recommend?

Did you know that link above the picture isn't working? Just checking.

    1. Our library has lots of Shakespeare made into movies on dvd, and that really is the way to go. Just reading it, it's hard to get the meaning behind some of the language, where if you're watching a play, the actors can give some context. I love Midsummer Night's Dream - and the movie version with Calista Flockhart and Michelle Pfieffer is really good. Even my husband liked it!

  3. I'm getting an error with your link, but I'd say he was very much a genre writer in his day. The pubic perception at the time was certainly of that opinion (especially when you think of genre writing as having entertainment as its primary goal as opposed to "message" or "theme" like you get in literary works).

    1. LOL. I'm correcting my sentence to read "public perception" rather than "pubic perception," although he was a saucy writer so...

    2. Every time I see the word "public" I read it as "pubic," so I guess you were right in line with my brain...

  4. Poop about the link! No, I didn't know that it was broken. I've fixed it now, though. Thanks for letting me know!
