Snippets

Snippets. I have snippets of blog posts running through my aching head.  I think I'll share my snippets and then go to bed.

1. What about the Space Jump! I was totally enthralled watching the Jump live on Sunday. Every time I re-watch the footage, I still am in awe.  I included the video from Red Bull Stratos, in case you didn't see the Jump, or in case you want to see it again.

My question is - what does he do now?  How do you top a supersonic freefall from twenty-four miles above the Earth?

2.  How-To Books.  I am halfway through four different how-to books.  The Plot Whisperer is my most recent acquisition, because I need to get started on the sequel to Finding Meara if I'm going to be able to release it next year as well.  (I know.  It sounds weird, considering I haven't even published the first one yet.)  So far the focus has been on me and my writer-ly tendencies, and overcoming weaknesses (such as procrastination.)  I've only read Chapter One, though.

3.  People are strange.  I attended a staff development training last Monday, and then chaperoned my son's field trip last Friday.  At the training, I noticed woman preening each other.  You know, fixing each other's hair, straightening clothes. At the field trip, I saw the same behavior from the little girls.  It made me wonder if I'm strange, or if the adult woman who were preening each other were strange.  Is preening normal female behavior?  Personally, I prefer to take care of my own grooming, thank you very much. If something is amiss, I do appreciate a heads-up, but I prefer everyone keep their hands to themselves.

Well, my head now feels like it's going to explode, so I am ending this post.  Thanks for reading through the rambling to this point, if you made it that far!

What did you think of the Space Jump?
Are you reading any good How-To books right now?
What strange things have you seen people doing lately?

  1. I haven't seen the video. Don't have time now, it's almost time to get kids up for school. Will watch it though.

Not reading any how to books right now. Or lately.

I'm not one of those women either. If I saw a lintball (or whatever) on the UPPER back or shoulders of a good friend, I would probably just pull it off. But that's it.

I wouldn't reach over and fix hair. Or touch them anywhere else. Especially if I can tell them it's there and they can reach it.

(I admit, I do this to my kids, but they MY kids, and they are... kids.)

    1. I feel better. I don't think I preened people even when I was a little kid. I preen my kids, too, but it's more natural for sure.

  2. Hahaha. No, I do not understand that grooming thing. I like to take care of my own (omg, I almost wrote a new word just now - prooning. hehehe) grooming. It's okay if mum does it. And people are welcome to tuck my t-shirt label in for me if it's sticking out, as does often happen to me. But out in public I prefer to not have someone try to fix my hair (there is no fixing it. evarrr) or straighten my clothes (I LIKE being rumpled and unkempt, thanks!).

    1. I like prooning! It's a great new word. Thanks for weighing in on the preening issue. :)

  3. I have to admit, I have conflicting opinions about the space jump. On the one hand, it is cool that he worked so hard and achieved something so extreme. On the other hand, did he really contribute to society? If he didn't, is that a problem? Is it ok to achieve something for its own sake?

    1. I didn't really think much about benefit to society. It was just super-cool to watch him hop off the capsule into space and then land walking on the earth. Two benefits to science I've heard of is he tried out the next generation of spacesuit and learned that the ultimate rising height of a balloon is higher than once thought, so there was something. :)

  4. The preening seems odd. My husband thought that space jump guy was pretty cool. I'm not reading any how-to books now but I realized the other day that one of my goals for this year was to read 5 writing-craft-related books and I haven't had time for one! Better get going on that!

    1. The consensus seems to be preening is not normal adult behavior. I'm feeling justified. For once I'm not the anomoly...

  5. I don't understand the math. 600 mph is 10 miles/minute or 52,800 feet/minute, yet from a beginning altitude of 124,000 feet he dropped at or above that speed for over three minutes? Hmmmm . . .

I haven't noticed the preening so much among women, but I do notice a lot of women, including my wife, constantly tweaking this or that about their husbands.

  6. I didn't see the space jump. Strange behavior mostly comes from my husband...

  7. Oh the space fall was cool. Hmm not sure about the whole preening. Hmm I'm not a fan of being preened either.

    1. I personally don't like people I know casually touching me. I'm not sure where that comes from.
